Vista Build 5728

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Windows VistaVista 5728 installed on the main PC (did an upgrade over 5600). Not noticed any real differences which is to be expected I suppose. Will be interesting interesting if I can get Office 2007 working in this beta :).
Weridly though the performance thingy went up from 4.7 to 5.0 which is good I suppose. Just need to get the last few bits of software working like printers, VNC Manager, WinRAR, Nero, FlashFXP and Adobe CS2. Once they’re running on it I’ll be a happy chap.
macBook Pro

This new build of Vista installed perfectly on Parallels on the macBook Pro running OS X 10.4.7. Did an in place upgrade, took about an hour and a half and is there working perfectly as before :). Still no point in using it in Parallels over XP has the software I like doesn’t work perfectly in it.

Charlotte Church Show …

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

OMG … an amazing load of crap. Got to be said the wife was watching it and I was amazed at how clearly scripted and shit it was. Kinda reminded me of “Don’t forget your tooth brush” but not funny and just crude crap. Please people stop watching this crap and let it get canceled.

Charlotte looks like a whale on this show, but each to their own I suppose. The script is just slow completely un-funny, Charlotte and her guest clearly just read of the prompts. I don’t get the Welsh stuff in it, what’s the point in all that crap ? Arrr well who cares.

Can I have a show please I promise I’ll do better than this crap !

Skype Auto Volume Pains

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Skype We all love Skype but it’s a pain when you tell it to leave your volumes alone and it fiddles with them anyway. Well in a blatent steel from a mates blog here’s the solution -

  1. Close Skype if its open.
  2. Open C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Skype\YOURSKYPEACCOUNT\Config.xml, with your favourite text editor
  3. Find and edit the existing AGC element and change the 1 to a 0.
  4. Add a new AGC element as a child to the Call element; again it should have a value of 0.
  5. Save and close Config.xml.
  6. Open C:\Documents and Settings%USERNAME%\Application Data\Skype\Shared.xml, and add another AGC element as a child to VoiceEng element; again ensure that it has a value of 0.
  7. Restart Skype, and test using the echo123 service.

Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh Uninstall

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Windows VistaAfter the problems from my earlier log blog note … like a genius I’ve sussed it in the end :).

Looks like it didn’t like the fact that my My Docs was re-located as a mapped network drive. Changed that and it started to give decent error messages.

I did have to manualy completed uninstall Office 2007 Beta 2 though ! Simplest way was to remove all the files and anything I could find in the registry then load the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clear the MSIs down :). All installed and running cleanly in Windows Vista R1 x64 at last.

Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh and Vista

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Windows VistaWell Microsoft Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh is out and can be downloaded from here. Trying to install it on Windows Vista RC1 x64 is a nightmare :(.

The install appears to go fine but comes up with “The installation of this package failed. Please see  for more information.”. Now I have a none working Office suite on Vista. I suppose it’s what ya get for running Beta all over the place :).
There’s an MS KB about the problem but it’s a load of crap. There’s plenty of disk space everywhere and I’ve downloaded the 500Mb update twice. The temp area has been cleared and the log it creates has no errors in and ends with -

Property(S): MsiUISourceResOnly = 1
Property(S): Msix64 = 15
Property(S): ProWW = D:\Temp\OWPBFA0.tmp\ProWW.msp

Will keep looking :S.

x3650 Setup / Install

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

If any of you out there are trying to get your nice spanking new IBM x3650 server built with Windows … you’ll be getting a little stuck. IBM ain’t got their ServerGUIDE working on it yet so getting the ServeRAID 8k drivers on there is tricky. Esp. as they don’t have a floppy drive on it !

The solution is a USB floppy … and yes it does work.

I want one …

macBook Pro Fault Mk I

Friday, September 8th, 2006

macBook ProOoo dear our new macBook Pro has developed a fault already :(. It’s only 2 months old and the mouse (tracker pad) button is clicking like a beast.

I guess that the connector pad thingy underneath is stuffed. The click still works but it’s a well irritating click. I suppose we’ll have to get in touch with Apple and get the bad boy repaired. Here’s another thought … maybe they can fix the toaster that it is ! Clocked up 97C today when in medium use !

If it was a cheep Dell laptop I suppose it wouldn’t matter as much. But nearly £2000 it should be perfect.
