iPhone 3G … getting fed up

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Ok so everyone loves the iphone 3G. The hype has no doubt helped make it so popular and thus just over a month ago I got one through work. Now I’ve been using Windows Mobile devices since the Compaq Aero PDA that was black and white ! I’ve probably had over 30 PDAs and phones over the years so coming to the iphone 3G was interesting. It’s got to be said that the hardware is amazing. I love having a Word document viewer, MP3 player, phone, calander and emails all on one very well made device. It works very nicely and taking and making calls on it is great. There’s no delay in pressing buttons like on a Windows Mobile PDA.

To tell the truth I’m already getting a bit sick of it. The lack of freedom is ruining it.

Why can’t I share the data connection on it ?
Why can’t I use sat nav on it ?

Because Apple have decided that we don’t need it. Personaly I don’t think that’s got anything to do with them. And as such I’m still using my HTC Touch Diamond. Why on earth do we have to put up with this ? ! Why on earth have Apple restricted all users to these rules ?

I’m off to Jailbreak my phone in the hope of being able to use it how I (the owner) wants to.

Eten X500+ Well after the mess that was the Toshiba G900 I moved onto the Eten X500+. Everything I’ve ever wanted in a device, VGA, GPS, phone - PERFECT. The battery life is very good, at least a good 3 days use as a PDA before it needs a charge. The VGA screen can be read outside and looks lovely and crisp. The GPS is very very quick at an initial lockon and appears perfectly accurate. The build is compact and solid, I mean totaly solid. It opperates quickly and doesn’t need too many restarts :).

I’m currently running it with the following software installed -

  • SPB Wallet
  • TomTom Navigator 6
  • SPB Mobile Shell
  • SPB Phone Suite
  • ETEN Satellite Data Update
  • Resco File Explorer
  • For the first time in a long time I acctualy don’t care about what else is coming out as I know it’s not going to equal or match the X500+ for quite some time.

Toshiba Portege G900Even though the G900 appears to be locking up alot there also appears to be quite alot of people buying and getting to like it. I’m sure Toshiba are going to get this locking issue sorted rather quickly. The more software I use on it the more interesting the experience gets. The screen really is a joy to use and the opperation of everything is quick and slick.

With this in mind I’m sure there are many other people out there that have thoughts and great software they use to share with us. So I’ve started up myg900.com the forum for it is uploading now and should be ready for action within a few hours.

    See you over there :).

    Toshiba Portege G900 Lock Ups

    Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Toshiba Portege G900Well it appears this device isn’t quite as good as I’d hopped. It’s got megga lockup problems. I thought it was just me and I was moaning about it here but no one was joining in. But I have sine spotted this and this.

Still unable to pin it down but haven’t given up yet. Interestingly it didn’t lock up once last night, as this morning it’s working as expected without having to pop the battery out !

Toshiba Portege G900Got to say I’m liking the G900 that turned up here this morning. Windows Mobile 6 is smooth to use and hasn’t hung on me yet :). The WiFi appears good and the screen is clear to read. One small issue is that the 800×480 screen has stopped SPB Mobile Shell from working as expected.

More as and when I can be bothered, unless there are questions.

    LooX C550

LooX C550 My eyes are starting to die on me as I now apparently need glasses. So I blame it on the crapy res on the HP HW6910. I’m bored of using 240×320 or whatever it is. I’ve been at that res in black and white since the Aero days ! I can’t wait till the summer or when ever the Glofish thingy is out, so I bought a Pocket LooX C550.

I can’t believe the screen res :), lovely 480×640, should have done this ages ago. I so don’t miss the keyboard at all and now reading Word docs / emails etc is a joy.

GloFiish X800Spotted this Eten GloFiish X800 on a few sites a while ago but I didn’t actually read about it.

With WiFi, Bluetooth, Phone, GPS, camera, WM6 (Windows Mobile 6) and VGA screen res !!! Amazing … everything I’ve been after for ages. Been looking for a decent VGA phone device that wasn’t a brick. Appears this will do the job perfectly. And look how small it is !

I wonder when it’ll be out.

    TomTom Navigator 6

    Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

HP HW6910Well I’ve got the free HP iPAQ upgrade for TomTom Navigator 6. Had a few problems with maps but it’s all working like a dream now at last :D.

Best thing is that it didn’t cost a penny :).

    GPS Radio Problem

    Friday, September 8th, 2006

HP HW6910Follow up to the GPS Radio problem.

Traveling yesturday and I’m starting to sort of understand the daft HW6900 series GPS Radio Power issue. Ok I’m in the car with my HW6910 connected via Bluetooth to the car radio and the build in GPS working away on TomTom Navigator 5.

I recieve a call and the GPS is still working. The second the call is finished the GPS powers off ! But here’s the werid bit, a new call comes in and a few seconds later the GPS powers back up again. Drop the call and guess what it’s off again. Only way I’ve found to get it back again is to exit TTN5 and re-load it.

Now a software powered GPS power switch is all well and good if the software works correctly. But obviously it doesn’t :(. Time to email HP and ask for tech support so they can include a fix in a future FW update.
Or does anyone have a software switch that can power the GPS radio on ? I’ve not found one yet.

    HP HW6910 Fault

    Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

HP HW6910Problem … problem … there’s something very funny going on with me PocketPC. GPS working and Bluetooth connected to the car, working lovely. When I’ve finished a phone call and the call gets dropped guess what, the GPS chip appears to power off !

What a pain in the ass !

No firmware update for it, but we’ll have to email HP as there’s no way this is right. Watch this space.
